In the first years of life, nutrition plays a vital role in determining a child’s physical growth, brain development, and immune system. A proper diet from infancy not only helps babies grow strong and healthy but also lays a solid foundation for long-term well-being.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life. Breast milk provides all the essential nutrients, including proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and, most importantly, natural antibodies that protect babies from infections.
In addition, breastfeeding strengthens the emotional bond between mother and baby, providing comfort and security.
For mothers who cannot breastfeed due to health reasons or special circumstances, infant formula is an alternative. However, it is important to consult a doctor to select the right formula that meets the baby’s nutritional needs.
After six months, a baby’s nutritional needs exceed what breast milk alone can provide. This is the right time to start introducing solid foods. The first foods should be soft, easy-to-digest options such as infant cereals, thin porridge, pureed vegetables, or mashed fruits.
A key principle is to introduce one food at a time and observe the baby’s reaction to detect any signs of allergies. Solid foods should be introduced gradually: from small to larger amounts, from thin to thicker textures, and from single foods to a more diverse diet.
Infant nutrition is not only about providing enough nutrients but also about building healthy eating habits for the future. Parents should be patient, create a positive and enjoyable mealtime environment, avoid forcing children to eat, and encourage them to explore new flavors.
Nutrition in infancy forms the solid foundation for a child’s overall development. Beginning with breastfeeding, followed by appropriate complementary feeding and the right nutrient supplementation, parents can help their children grow up healthy, intelligent, and ready for a bright future.
